The colonization of this land began with the reign of terror inflicted by Spanish soldiers and missionaries who sought to convert all Indigenous people into Catholic subjects of Spain and steal their land. The Missions were plantations, built by slave labor and sustained through brutal physical violence and extractive land practices. The Spanish brought deadly diseases, invasive species and Christian ideology based on human dominion of the natural world with devastating consequences for the Lisjan people and all living beings they shared the land with.

After a brief but harrowing Mexican rancho period, Lisjan survivors faced extermination policies of the United States that aimed to eliminate California Indians entirely. In a climate of virulent racial discrimination and state-sponsored vigilante killings, most Lisjan families survived by isolating themselves and concealing their identities. Cultural and spiritual traditions were forced into dormancy or secrecy, and much knowledge perished with the passing of generations.

Despite these concerted efforts to erase our history and identity, the Lisjan community forms a diverse and vibrant constellation of tribes and families. Utilizing a wide array of survival strategies to navigate a profoundly altered 21st century world, we continue to revitalize our cultural practices and uphold our responsibilities to protect and care for our ancestral homeland. 

This profound process, simultaneously rooting back and reaching forward, is embodied in Sogorea Te’ Land Trust’s Chochenyo language program Mak Noono Tiirinikma, our language awakens.

The Lisjan people... 

have lived in the territory of Huchiun since the beginning of time.

For thousands of years, hundreds of generations...

the Lisjan Ohlone people have lived on the land that is now known as the East Bay in the San Francisco Bay Area. We did not own the land, we belonged to it. 

Generation after generation, we cultivated reciprocal relationships with the plants and animals we shared this place with, and developed beautiful and powerful cultural practices, that kept us in balance.

The Confederated Villages of Lisjan is one of many Ohlone tribes...

each with its own geography and history. 

Our tribes, cultures and languages are as diverse as the ecosystems we live within. 

When the Spanish invaded in the late 1700s, in their ignorance they called us Costanoan, people of the coast. In the 1960s and 70s, inspired by the Black Power and American Indian Movements, we organized and renamed ourselves Ohlone. But there are 8 different bands of Ohlone people, with connected but different territories and languages. The Lisjan speak the language Chochenyo.

The Lisjan are made up of the seven Tribes... 

that were directly enslaved at Mission San Jose in Fremont, CA and Mission Dolores in San Francisco, CA: Lisjan (Ohlone), Karkin (Ohlone), Bay Miwok, Plains Miwok, Wappo, Delta Yokut and Napian (Patwin). 

Our territory includes 5 Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, Napa and San Joaquin, and we are directly tied to the “Indian Town” census of the 1920’s and the Verona Band.

Sogorea Te’ Land Trust is based in Huchiun, in unceded [niet afgestaan] Lisjan territory, what is now known as Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, Piedmont, Emeryville and Albany, California.

The Vision to the Youth Bartholomew... 

is a painting by the Russian artist Mikhail Nesterov.

The first and best known work in his series on Sergius of Radonezh, a medieval Russian saint. It is considered ´the inaugural work of the Russian Symbolist movement´ and is in the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

The image of St. Sergius of Radonezh, who had been born Bartholomew, was near and dear to the artist since childhood, and was the embodiment of the moral ideal for Nesterov. Nesterov gave St. Sergius a particularly important role in rallying [verzamelen, bijeen brengen van] the Russian people.

The venerable monk, when he had ended his prayers, glanced at the boy and, conscious that he beheld the chosen vessel of the Holy Spirit, he called him to his side, blessed him, bestowed on him a kiss in the name of Christ, and asked: 

"What art thou seeking, or what dost thou want, child?" 

The boy answered: 

"My soul desires above all things to understand the Holy Scriptures. I have to study reading and writing, and I am sorely vexed that I cannot learn these things. Will you, holy Father, pray to God for me, that he will give me understanding of book-learning?" 

The monk raised his hands and his eyes toward heaven...

sighed, prayed to God, then said: "Amen."

Taking out from his satchel, as if it were some treasure, with three fingers, he handed to the boy what appeared to be a little bit of white wheaten bread prosphora, saying to him: 

"Take this in thy mouth, child, and eat. This is given thee as a sign of God's grace and for the understanding of Holy Scriptures. Though the gift appears but small, the taste thereof is very sweet."´

Elizaveta Feodorovna invited talented artists... 

and architects to create the convent. 

Here, we can see some great artworks. The Church of the Intercession was built by Alexei Shchusev, who later became a well-known architect and built some Moscow landmarks such as the Kazansky Railway Station and Lenin’s Mausoleum. 

The church was inspired by the oldest Russian churches in Novgorod and Pskov, and it was built in the popular at that time Russian art-nouveau style.

A famous Russian painter Mikhail Nesterov frescoed the church in white and blue colours. 

You can see heavenly birds, angels, lilies as symbols of purity and innocence, and the roses as symbols of love. Also, there are the scenes from the Bible and the main picture "The Holy Rus", where the nurses help people to come to Christ and get relief from their sufferings. 

The crypt was frescoed by a well-known Russian artist Pavel Korin.

St. Martha and Mary Convent in Moscow founded by a German Princess, as a memorial to her husband, also became a memorial to this wonderful woman, her soul, her deep faith and mercy and tragedy of her life. The Russian Orthodox Church canonized her. In Russia, there are several convents and churches devoted to St. Elizaveta. 

The convent of St. Martha and Mary continue its service. 

There is an orphanage, a hospital for seriously ill children here. 

And in summer, the convent is full of flowers... 

as it was in the time of Elizaveta Feodorovna.

If you walk along Bolshaya Ordynka street in Zamoskvorechye in Moscow, 

you pass by a simple, unassuming [bescheiden] gate with a small door in it. 

But if you enter this door, you will find one of the most interesting Moscow convents, see brilliant works of well-known architects and painters, and in a small museum, learn about its touching history full of mercy and tragedy. 

This is St. Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy in Moscow, founded by a German Princess of the House of Hesse-Darmstadt, the granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England - the Grand Duchess of Russia Elisabeth.

A small museum...

on the territory of St. Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy tells about the life of its founder - Elisabeth. 

When she was 19, she married the Grand Duke of Russia - Sergei Aleksandrovich. After seven years, she converted to Orthodoxy by her own will, and got the name Elizaveta Feodorovna. After her husband died in a bomb blast organized by the revolutionaries, she sold out her jewelry, founded a convent and became its abbess. 

She said, “I am leaving the high world, where I had a high position, but together with you, I go up to the greater world, to the world of the poor and suffering”. 

In the convent... 

virtues of St. Mary and St. Martha, the prayer and service, were combined. 

Sisters in this Abode of Mercy had to take vows of chastity, poverty and obedience, but unlike the nuns, after a few years, they could leave the convent and get married. This place was for all women who wanted to help those in need. 

In the convent, they received spiritual and medical training. 

They worked tirelessly among the poor and the sick. 

Elizaveta Feodorovna was called the White Angel of Moscow.

but a road full of light shown to me by God.

where Elizaveta Feodorovna met the last Russian emperor and his family, the icons embroidered by her hands, and her glove that she lost when she was arrested in 1918. 

Together with other Romanovs, she was murdered in Alapaevsk. “Father, release them, they don't know what they do”, the last words of Elisabeth are written at the bottom of her statue in the convent.

Let silence be the balm for your wisdom, for today you stand before the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

To many I have given incalculable treasures, but others received the crumbs of My bread, and in them I have seen the value they have given it. I am not demeaning [vernederen, verlagen] any consciousness.

The keys have already been revealed to the world. Time is coming to an end, and the clock of My Father marks a new meeting within the great universal time. You are being called to cross the portal, the portal of the heart, the portal of humility.

There are some of you that are lagging behind. Remember that you are freer than birds. I do not come to bring you fear, but rather inner growth, so that your minds and lives set aside the structures, so that the only model of God can dwell there. But that will not be forced on those that do not want to experience it. Just like in Kibeho, you will not be able to say you did not hear the Lord.

Before the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, in this Most Holy Trinity, in which you were placed today by Mercy, I reveal this which is My Petition to you.

I call on you to live something new, something unknown, distant from your material life. I call on you to live the life of the spirit that is not shaped by structures, but rather by the great consciousness of the heart. Many are called to seek this goal, but you are governed by Laws, and each time you decide before Me, I only need to wait.

I come to give you Love, beyond your structures. You have seen My Love, you have known My Love and you have felt My Love throughout these times. But you owe much to My God. My Mercy is infinite, that is why He allows all things.

Today I speak even to your cells, for they too are called to live the change, when you only seek My unity.

Be worthy in the Father, in the Son and in the Holy Spirit so as to live the new phase of the Earth.

You must be ready to no longer be together, for My Father is Who presents the Purpose, and thus His universal Will is done in the times that will come.

Silence and mercy will allow you to discover...

Because Christ will not only hold you accountable for transformation, but He will indicate day by day each one of your steps. For those who have ears to hear and heart to understand His messages, they take large steps.

Many times I have said to you that I do not wait for you to be perfect.

door Sint-Petrus naar Gallië gestuurd om het evangelie te verkondigen, samen met twee helpers, de diaken Valerius en de subdiaken Maternus. 

Aangekomen in Ehl, een plaats in de Elzas, overleed Maternus door uitputting. Zijn twee metgezellen keerden moedeloos terug naar Rome, en smeekten Petrus hun vriend weer tot leven te wekken. Deze gaf zijn herdersstaf aan Eucharius en terug bij het graf, waarin Maternus zich al 40 dagen bevond, raakte hij met de staf het dode lichaam aan, waarin het leven terugkeerde. 

Maternus vertrok daarop naar Keulen, waar hij bisschop werd. Eucherius werd bisschop van Trier. Na de dood van Eucharius, was Valerius 15 jaar lang bisschop van Trier, waarna Maternus hem opvolgde. 

Maternus had in de tussentijd de bisdommen Keulen en Tongeren, gesticht en was in totaal 40 jaar bisschop. Na zijn dood ontstond er onenigheid over waar hij begraven moest worden. Men legde het dode lichaam in een bootje, en dit dreef stroomopwaarts naar Trier, waar hij begraven werd.

Volgens een andere legende... 

was Maternus naamgever van de stad Namen. 

In de eerste eeuw zou de stad Sedrochia hebben geheten naar de Tongerse koning Sedroch, die een versterking op de rots van Champeau boven de Samber en de Maas had gebouwd. 

Daar was een heidense tempel in een grot waar een afgod Nam orakelde. Bij de komst van Maternus, viel de hogepriester van Nam, die een mensenoffer voorbereidde, dood. Maternus legde de afgod het zwijgen op met de woorden ´Nam mutum´ (Nam stom). Uit deze woorden werd de nieuwe naam van de stad afgeleid. 

Maternus deed ter plaatse een nieuwe bron ontspringen... 

waarin de inwoners van de stad gedoopt werden.[5]
