"If I ever become a Saint...
I will surely be one of 'darkness.'
I will continually be absent from Heaven:
to (light) the light of those in darkness on earth"
Q:
So what do you say to those who call her experience a crisis of faith, that she didn't really believe in God, or somehow imply that her darkness was a sign of psychological instability?
Father Kolodiejchuk:
It wasn't a crisis of faith, or that she lacked faith, but that she had a trial of faith where...
she experienced the feeling that she did not believe in God.
This trial required a lot of human maturity, otherwise she wouldn't have been able to do it. She would have become unbalanced.
We can really be living the cross in someway — it is painful, and it hurts, and just because we can spiritualize, it does not take way the pain — but one can be joyful as well... because one is living with Jesus. And that is not false! This is how and why Mother lived a life so full of joy!

In a letter to her sisters...
Mother Teresa makes the charism of the order more explicit, saying:
'My dear children, without suffering, our work would just be social work, very good and helpful, but it would not be the work of Jesus Christ, not part of the redemption.
Jesus wanted to help us by sharing our life, our loneliness, our agony and death. All that, He has taken upon Himself, and has carried it in the darkest night. Only by being one with us, He has redeemed us.
We are allowed to do the same: all the desolation of poor people, not only their material poverty, but their spiritual destitution must be redeemed, and we must have our sháre in it.
Pray thus when you find it hard:
'I wish to live in this world which is far from God,
which has turned so much from the light of Jesus,
to help them — to take upon me
something of their suffering.'

At the end of the Chaplet prayers,
on the medal, say the following:
Prayer to the United Hearts of Jesus and Mary
'O United Hearts of Jesus and Mary,
You are All-Grace, All-Mercy, All-Love.
Let my heart be joined to Yours,
so that my every need is present in Your United Hearts.
Most especially,
shed Your grace upon this particular need:
for recognition by all of God the Father's Dominion over mankind.
Help me to recognize and accept
Your loving will in my life.
Amen.
Holy and Sacred Wounds
of the United Hearts of Jesus and Mary,
answer my prayer.

In Atonement to [verzoenend]
the Hearts of Jesus and Mary
Our Lady as Refuge of Holy Love, says:
'I invite you to understand
that your 'yes' in the present moment to Holy Love
is atoning to Our United Hearts.
I tell you this, My little one, for to live
in Holy Love in every moment requires heroic self-discipline
and surrender to God's Divine Will through Holy Love."
You can sacrifice many great things
- possessions, events, and more -
but none so great as your own will.
This is the greatest atonement.'

Meditating on the Sorrows of Mary
Our Lady as Refuge of Holy Love, says:
'As My Son suffered for you, I suffered as well,
in My intellect, in My heart, and in My body.
My physical cross remained hidden.
My emotional and intellectual crosses could only be guessed at
- the intensity burning within Me.
So too, should your suffering remain hidden,
whenever possible, to gain merit for souls,
grace for the world.'

Meditating
on the Passion of Our Lord
Our Lady, in white and gray, says:
'Jesus was willingly put to death for the sins of mankind.
He died for each one and for all.
From His side flows, yet today [ook nu vandaag],
an unending font of Love and Mercy.
Do not be reluctant [terughoudend], as Simon was reluctant,
to embrace the crosses you are given.
Many suffer the eternal flames of hell
for no one has been willing to suffer for them.
Eternal Victim,
truly present in the tabernacles of the world,
pray for us.'

In Honor of [ter ere van]
the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Our Lady, all in white, Her Heart exposed, learned:
'Immaculate Heart of Mary, You are...
the purest vessel of grace,
the definition of holiness,
and a sign of the apocalypse.
Mary, Your Heart is...
a Refuge of Holy Love --
a counter sign in an evil age.
Dear Heart of Mary, it has been ordained
that the conversion and peace of the world
be entrusted to You.
Only through Holy Love can the battle be won.
As you, Heart of Mary, have been pierced by many swords,
impale our hearts with the flaming arrow of Holy Love.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.'

Allow yourselves to be drawn into this Vessel of perfect Love, Mercy, and Truth.
Let the Flame of His Heart consume you...

God the Father, He says:
'I am Lord over all hearts. My Dominion is from age to age. My Dominion must be recognized and revered [geëerbiedigd] by mankind before any peace plan can be effective and long-lasting. Mankind cannot concoct [beramen] a peace plan that I am not a part of and expect it to be successful.
The Truth and the peace of the world must be consecrated to the Heart of the Holy Mother, the Sacred Heart of My Son, and My Own Paternal Heart.
To accomplish this, pray the Chaplet of the United Hearts daily for the first nine days of each month, dedicating this effort to recognition by all of My Dominion over mankind.
This effort holds great potential towards conversion of the most stubborn hearts. I will burn away iniquity [ongerechtigheid] as yet unrealized.
The sands of time are running out.
Unite in this effort.
Those who honor the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, honor Me.'

Read Hebrews 10:25-26
Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. For if we sin deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins.

In September 1946 Mother Teresa was sent for her annual retreat to the Loreto Convent in Darjeeling. During this train journey, she had a mystical encounter with Christ. In this encounter, which Mother later referred to as the 'call within a call', Christ urged her to give up all and follow Him into the slums to serve Him in the poorest of the poor:
"Come be my light," He commanded, "I cannot go alone - they don't know me, so they don't want me. Go amongst them, carry me with you into them..."
Mother then began receiving a series of interior locutions, in which she was really hearing the voice of Jesus and intimately conversing with Him, that continued until the middle of the following year.
In one of these visions she had in 1947, Jesus said to her:
"I want Indian nuns, victims of My love, who would be Mary and Martha, who would be so very united to Me as to radiate My love on souls... I want free nuns covered with My poverty of the Cross... You will dress in simple Indian clothes or rather like My Mother dressed - simple and poor... Your sari will become holy, because it will be My symbol."
Mother was already a professed Loreto nun and therefore, had to get permission from the Bishop and her superiors to carry out what Christ demanded of her.
On April 12, 1948, the Vatican finally permitted her to work outside the convent. Mother was to remain outside cloister for one year after which Archbishop Périer, the Archbishop of Calcutta, would decide whether she should continue with her work or return to Loreto.

On 10 September 1946...
Teresa experienced what she later described as 'the call within the call', when she traveled by train to the Loreto convent in Darjeeling from Calcutta for her annual retreat: 'I was to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them. It was an order. To fail would have been to break the faith.'...
She began missionary work with the poor in 1948, replacing her traditional Loreto habit with a simple, white cotton sari with a blue border.
In 1952...
Teresa opened her first hospice, with help from Calcutta officials.
She converted an abandoned Hindu temple into the Kalighat Home for the Dying Destitues, free for the poor, and renamed it Kalighat, the Home of the Pure Heart [Nirmal Hriday].
Those brought to the home received medical attention and the opportunity to die with dignity in accordance with their faith: Muslims were read the Quran, Hindus received water from the Ganges, and Catholics received extreme unction.
'A beautiful death', Teresa said...
'is for people who lived like animals...
to die like angels -- loved and wanted.'

Mother Teresa was born 1910 as Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu...
in Skopje, at a time when the city was under the Ottoman Empire.
In an Albanian-Roman Catholic family...
as the third child of the Bojaxhiu family, alongside her sister Aga (1904) and brother Lazar (1907). It is believed that her father Nikollë - a well to do businessman and Albanian rights activist - was a member of the Vlach community. It was characteristic of her family that there were many mixed marriages.
At that time, Skopje was a developed trade center, a multi-cultural and multi-religious environment. She had learned to communicate with everyone, from those who are different in language, culture, religion, and worldview.
That's why she had a lot of photos in Roma costumes, because she had direct contacts with her Roma surroundings and Roma families who especially loved them.

John McKenna...
worked at the Chevrolet automobile factory.
He built cars with hundreds of other people on the assembly line. But some factories were closing down. You see, years ago, our country's economy was very bad. And like John, they couldn't buy food for their families. Thousands of men and women were out of work. It was a very hard time. They called it the Great Depression.
Now, John was a Christian man, who had a strong faith in God. But he was only working a few hours a week, and unsure how to support his family. Discouraged, he went to Fr. Solanus: "Father, I don’t know what to do. I can’t support a wife and family with the hours I’ve been working. I haven’t had a full day now in weeks."
Fr. Solanus said: "You know John, there are 500 other men and women in your plant that are also out of work."
John was sad. He shook his head, and looked down at the desk between him and Fr. Solanus.
On the desk was a notebook...
for enrolling people in the Seraphic Mass Association.
You see, Capuchin missionary priests all over the world pray for the people whose names are written in the book.
Fr. Solanus waited, holding a pen in his hand.
John glanced at the notebook...
and suddenly his eyes flew wide open.
"Father, let’s enroll Chevrolet, the whole company, in the Association!"
Fr. Solanus thought it was a great idea. Normally one mass was said for one person. Why not say 500 Masses for 500 people at the plant?
"All right, John," said Fr. Solanus, "It’s a deal."
John McKenna was so excited, he offered to pay for a whole year's enrollment in the Association for the entire company, even though he was out of work, and very poor.
You're never going to believe what happened next.
That very night, just a few hours later, Chevrolet received a huge order for cars. John and all his co-workers headed back to the plant. John McKenna was so excited to tell Fr. Solanus the news. "Father, we had overtime [overuren] yesterday! And now, we hear the company has an order for 45,000 more cars in the next 30 days!"
That was the order that saved Detroit from bankruptcy...
and taught John McKenna that sacrificing for others...
is more important than worrying about your own security.
Blessed be God in all His Designs!

The 'Capuchin Mission' or 'Seraphic Mass Association'...
has been in existence in the Capuchin Order since 1899.
It was begun by a young Swiss woman, Miss Frieda Folger. She founded the organization in which its members sought material means for the work of the foreign missions. They shared in the work of the missionaries, and also in the prayers and Holy Masses offered annually by the members of the Capuchin Order.
The organization - bearing the title of 'Seraphic' in honor of St. Francis, often called 'the Seraphic saint' - has been blessed by many popes.
Our own beloved Blessed Solanus Casey, whose Cause for Canonization is now in Rome, always recommended to the faithful these enrollements, support of the missions, frequent reception of the sacraments, and prayer.
The Capuchins of the St. Joseph Province began by serving German-speaking immigrants beginning in 1857. As more immigrant groups entered the country, the friars expanded their work among the Irish, Italian and other European groups.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, ministry was extended to the Native Americans in Montana, and to the African American communities, especially in Milwaukee. Several foreign missionaries departed for India and China in the first third of the century.
In 1938, the province received the care of the overseas mission fields in Bluefields, Nicaragua, and in Guam.
In 1988, the Province of St. Joseph was assigned the mission of Panana in addition to already existing mission fields.
Since that time, its friars have worked in a many different nations in various parts of the world.

He served for two decades...
in a succession of friaries in New York. His first assignment was at Sacred Heart Friary in Yonkers. He was later transferred to New York City, where he first served at Saint John's Church next to Penn Station and later at Our Lady Queen of Angels in Harlem.
He was recognized as an inspiring speaker.
-
In August 1924, he was transferred to the Saint Bonaventure convent in Detroit, where he worked until 1945. During this time, he mostly served as the simple porter [receptionist and doorkeeper].
Each Wednesday afternoon...he conducted well-attended services for the sick, and through these services, he became known for his great compassion and the fantastic results of his consultations with visitors. People considered him instrumental in cures and other blessings.
He loved to kneel before the Eucharist in the quiet of the night.
During his time at St. Bonaventure's, Casey was involved in the formation of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. The soup kitchen was founded in 1929 to provide food for Detroit's poor during the Great Depression. Casey is considered one of the founders of the soup kitchen, which is still in operation today.
-
As a violinist, he loved to play Irish songs for his fellow friars during recreation time, but he had a terrible singing voice, attributed to his childhood speech impediment. Other friars could not refrain from rolling their eyes or coughing, so he would excuse himself politely and sneak down to the chapel to entertain a spiritual audience at the tabernacle.
He ate little.
Until his late seventies, he joined the younger religious in games of tennis and volleyball.

Bernard (Barney) Francis Casey...
was born on November 25, 1870...
on a farm in the town of Oak Grove, Pierce County, Wisconsin.
The sixth of sixteen children born to Irish immigrants.
He contracted diphtheria in 1878, which permanently damaged his voice, leaving it wispy and slightly impaired. Two of his siblings died from the disease during that year.
The family later moved to Hudson, Wisconsin. In 1878, he began school at Saint Mary's, but this was cut short in October 1882, when the family relocated again, to Burkhardt in Saint Croix County.
In 1887, he left the farm for a series of jobs in his home state and in nearby Minnesota, working as a lumberjack [houthakker], a hospital orderly [verpleger], a guard [bewaker] in the Minnesota state prison, and a street car operator [trambestuurder] in Superior. His time as a prison guard saw him befriend a couple of Jesse James' cohorts.
At first, he desired married life, but the mother of a girl to whom he had proposed suddenly sent her off to a boarding school.
While working at his last job, he witnessed a brutal murder that caused him to evaluate his life and future. Driving his car in a rowdy section of Superior, he saw a drunken sailor stab a woman to death. He then acted on a call to the priesthood.
Due to his limited formal education, he enrolled at Saint Francis High School Seminary, the minor seminary of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, in January 1891, hoping to become a diocesan priest.
Classes there were taught in either German or Latin, neither of which he knew. In due course, he was advised that he should consider joining a religious order if he wanted to become a priest due to his academic limitations. There, he could be ordained as a 'simplex priest', who could preside at a Mass but would not have the faculties for public preaching or hearing confessions.
He returned home before deciding to make his application. While reflecting before a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he heard her spiritual voice telling him: 'Go to Detroit.'
He then applied to the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin in that city, and was received into it on January 14, 1897. He was given the religious name of Solanus, after Saint Francis Solanus - both men shared a love of the violin.
He made his vows on July 21, 1898. He struggled through his studies, but received ordination to the priesthood on July 24, 1904, from Archbishop Sebastian Messmer at Saint Francis of Assisi Church in Milwaukee. Because he had not performed well enough in his studies, he was indeed ordained as a 'simplex priest'.
He celebrated his first Mass on July 31, 1904.
In Appleton, with his family present.

Solanus Casey says:
'Praise be to Jesus. Today I have come to remind each soul that the path through the Chambers of the United Hearts asks for an ever-deepening commitment to serve God and others, and a lessening of the desire to serve self.
Always try to be the servant, not the one served. To be the one who pleases others, not the one who must be pleased. Do not fall into the desperate trap of viewing all events only with regard to how they affect you. Such self-centeredness is the undoing of personal holiness.
Take to heart these words.
It is God's Will for you.'
