 In total, Tissot took two long trips to the Holy Land... 

in 1886-7 and 1889... 

where he assembled sketches, pen drawings, photographs, and character models for his project. 

Later interviews and accounts of his journeys reveal that Tissot approached his first trip to the Holy Land with great intentionality. Upon his first approach toward Jerusalem, he resisted his guide's advice to enter the city by the gate of Jaffa (the most direct path) to avoid the coming rain. 

Instead, Tissot insisted that the luggage be sent ahead, while he made an hour long detour to approach the city from Mount Scopus. He did so while shielding [afschermen] his eyes, lest he see the city for the first time before reaching the perfect vantage [uitkijkpunt]. 

After completing this detour, he saw Jerusalem from the same perspective that Jesus would have. Even then, Tissot felt that he could scarcely sleep until he entered the city and visited the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. 

 

After settling into the city, however... 

Tissot took a strict and almost monastic schedule: 

6am to wake, 7am morning prayer with the nuns of the Convent of Marie Reparatrice, a few hours of excursion and work with the aid of his paid assistants, a break for lunch, a few more hours of work inside or outside the city, and then evening came, whence he would dine and rest mostly alone, perhaps taking notes, or creating sketches for future reference. 

Tissot's daily research would typically consist of seeking out locations and people for his sketches, speaking with local biblical authorities from both Jewish and Christian sects, and – perhaps the most visually massive task – studying and reconstructing the geography of Jerusalem. 

This last task meant envisioning how the now-destroyed Jewish Temple would appear within the ancient city, and deconstructing the subsequent growth around the hill of Golgotha, to reveal the original terrain beneath. 

For all of this strict work though, Tissot rarely saw it as tedious or overwhelming in proportion. Instead it was exactly what motivated him each day: 'Ce n'était pas un travail, c'était une prière.'

Deeply moved by this whole experience... 

and perhaps still suffering from the loss of Kathleen Newton... 

Tissot dedicated almost the entirety of his remaining life to creating subjects of a Christian nature. 

Starting only with the intention to depict a few scenes from the Gospels, he ventured to Egypt and Palestine for the first time, and lived as a pilgrim for many months. He hoped to experience the events of the Scriptures in their native setting, and to capture a lost vision of the Holy Land. 

Soon enough, Tissot would decide to expand his project, return a second time, and paint the entirety of the Gospel narrative as a single, cohesive story.

As Tissot suddenly disappeared from his refined and artistic circles... 

rumors began to abound. 

Many speculated that Tissot had left the city to live out a religious life in a monastery. 

Others believed that his sudden conversion and absence were merely part of a sensational act, capitalizing upon and profiting off of the Catholic revival movement emerging in France at the time. 

Even long-time friend Edgar Degas turned his back on Tissot, so much so that their friendship would never be repaired. He is quoted as saying, "Now he's got religion. He says he experiences inconceivable joy in his faith. At the same time, he not only sells his own products high, but sells his friends' pictures as well... Well, I can take my vengeance. I shall do a caricature of Tissot with Christ behind him, whipping him, and call it: Christ Driving His Merchant from the Temple!"  

Far away from the rumors, however... 

Tissot marched toward Jerusalem, accompanied by no European friends.

Only local guides, interpreters, and assistants to aid him.

Halfway through the process of the La Femme à Paris project... 

Tissot began working at the Church of Saint-Sulpice to research the next piece, 'La Femme qui Chant dans l'Église' or 'Musique Sacrée'. 

Accounts of the experience which followed vary slightly, and were sometimes influenced by gossip, or the feelings of the person doing the retelling. But overall, most report that Tissot paused from his work, when a priest began to celebrate mass. Having been raised with the habits and respectfulness of his devout Catholic mother, though not a practicing Catholic himself, Tissot knelt at the beginning of the Eucharistic prayer. 

Then, when the priest raised the host for consecration... 

Tissot felt seized by a vision of two homeless peasants resting within the crumbled ruins of a once great building – possibly the ruins of the French state. Then he noticed that leaning on their shoulder, but unknown to the couple, was a wounded and scarred Jesus. He bore a crown of thorns, and the other signs of his passion, but most importantly was consoling them, by joining them in their sorrow.

Tissot felt so plagued by this vision... 

that he abandoned his Woman of Paris project... 

and discreetly painted this intimate scene in the work 'Inward Voices' (The Ruins).

For a brief, but emotionally dense, portion of Tissot's life from 1876-1882 [40-46j.]... 

he met and eventually shared a home with the young [22j.] divorcée Kathleen Newton. 

A woman of Irish Catholic heritage... 

who grew up in the south Asian colonies. 

Newton met Tissot soon after divorcing her British husband and moving to London. 

Tissot was evidently moved by Newton, and after the two became further acquainted, he invited Kathleen and her children to come live with him at Grove End Road. 

This broken family's influence upon Tissot is immediately evident in the changes to the tone and character of his subsequent paintings. He began to focus less on scenes of parties, high class drama, and busy cosmopolitan life, and instead moved toward pictures of tranquillity, family life, and domesticity, often using Newton and her children for his subjects. 

Unfortunately, this contented portion of Tissot and Newton's life as a 'family'... 

soon came to an end, when Newton succumbed to a long struggle with tuberculosis in 1882. 

Newton's death left a visible mark on Tissot, who for many years after would dabble with mysticism and mediums, seeking to make contact with the deceased Newton. One of Tissot's paintings, 'The Apparition', whose original was thought to be lost or destroyed until a mere two years ago, portrays Tissot's vision from one of these sessions: Kathleen Newton next to the famous medium William Eglington.

Immediately following Newton's death... 

Tissot re-fled from London back to Paris, and took up work at a new studio. 

He worked on a few different projects, including The Prodigal Son in Modern Life (a subject he had already depicted in the context of the Middle Ages during his salon years) and the massive portraits of the La Femme à Paris series. Both of these projects were again received with mixed praise and criticism.

James/Jacques Joseph Tissot [1836-1902]... 

was a successful and renowned painter, recognized for his salon paintings, etchings, and depictions of Parisian and London high society. 

But at age 50, he abandoned the comfort and legacy he attained in that world, and dedicated the rest of his life's labor exclusively to manifesting the message of God's love for humanity. By the time Tissot died in 1902, around 15 years later, he had created what remains to this day the most exhaustive (and potentially the most ambitious) series of paintings ever based upon the Holy Scriptures. 

This story is about the devotion... 

of a man who was too British for the French yet too French for the British, too traditional for the Impressionists yet too modern for the Old Masters, too mystical for progressive intellectuals yet too quickly forgotten by his many Christian viewers. 

Though Tissot's works have recently become more accessible through the efforts of the Brooklyn Museum [New York] and other Tissot scholars, this page hopes to provide the most complete digital collection of the 500+ original works within Tissot's Gospel narrative, combining them into a single, accessible presentation.

Though individual pictures of the series are available in various places with various levels of quality, this may be the only complete and high quality presentation since the entire series was last on full display in the early 1900s. 

Hopefully, by making Tissot's Gospel accessible to the public once again, his original hope for the project may live on: to help the viewer witness Christ's ministry and sacrifice in our world and experience His love from a fresh perspective.

The Father taught all this to Me...

while living the forty days in the desert.

What I bring you today is this experience of love... 

lived and also fulfilled within Me, in this seeming desolation of the desert.

I not only invite you to find God in this desert that each one may be living at this moment.

to find, at some moment, the Light of the Kingdom of the Heavens.

This announced time is now, you are going through the end of times. A time of challenges, and also of uncertain moments, when souls do not know what path to follow or what direction to take to reach the Heart of My Father.

For this reason, I am here. 

And I will always be, even if in the time to come I may not appear.

My Love must echo in each human heart. My Words must resonate in each soul, like the precious Legacy that I have delivered to you throughout times, which will lead you, sooner or later, to discover within yourselves the virtues that I have left to you with so much love.

Precious gifts that God needs at this moment, so that through His children He may carry forward the Work of Mercy and Redemption, the most culminating moment, when all souls will have the opportunity to experience salvation.

Today I contemplate a world still in agony... 

a world divided by power and ambition, by war and by displacement... 

a wounded world, a hurt world, a destroyed world that still does not want to change.

But do not be burdened, nor become fearful, the cross that I deliver to each one of you is a definitive cross, but it is also an unknown cross that impels you to be brave and determined, that impels you to find the realization of the Divine Will.

I know that many are suffering due to what they are living at this moment, above all, those peoples who are outraged by their own brothers and sisters, places where darkness reigns and peace is dissipated. 

I invite you to be persevering in the power of prayer, may prayer build what would seem impossible, may prayer concretize what would seem distant. Have a determined faith at this moment, because in this way you will understand all that is happening at this time.

While I am here, I contemplate all necessities, which are many, and require My help. 

But I want to tell you something that I once said in Kibeho:

that in this end time... 

only those who are within My Heart and live in My Heart, will not perish... 

in spite of what may happen...and they will help those who cannot do this.

For this reason, in essence, all that you live and all that you do, must be done out of love, a solid love, a conscious love, a love that does not hasten, a love that advances and builds, a love that gives of itself and surrenders without knowing what will happen afterward.

Love is an unchangeable guide for you, it is the path that keeps you united to God, above all in this definitive time, when each step and each action must be premeditated upon in Love and in the benefits that this Love builds in each one.

If only humanity placed its attention upon this example that I give you, a great many chaotic situations would not exist. But humanity has appropriated love. To the point of believing that it decides by itself if it loves or not, if it accepts or rejects.

Companions, this is not Love.

Love is still unknown to you. 

The Love that comes from the Source. The Love that comes from the Father. A Love that always leads you to sacrifice in order to live sacred renunciation in plenitude [overlvloed], without expecting anything in return.

I know this is a step that many do not dare to take. 

But if I am here, and if I am your Master, is this Love impossible to live, by any chance? 

An unconditional and selfless Love. 

A Love that has nothing to lose... 

but has all to give, to build and to evolve.

If you do not reformulate this topic, every day, how will you step out of your own obstacles? 

And how will humanity step out of its own obstacles?

How can chaos be dissolved if souls do not deepen into the degrees of love? 

It is nothing impossible to achieve. 

Just as today I teach this to you, I also taught this to My apostles.

See the result in the life of each apostle... 

what they achieved and what they did for Me... 

what they did for the Creator.

Love will lead you to the void of yourselves. 

To a void where the All is to be found. 

Where lacks, dissatisfactions or even disturbances do not exist.

Souls should live the Love of My Heart. 

To learn to live in the Heart of God. 

Within His infinite and unfathomable Love.

If you, in your lives and in the lives of your brothers and sisters, foster the Greater Love, if  you sow and cultivate this Love, all the time, you will allow My bases of Return to be prepared, because I will have a place of repose in the heart of My companions, I will have a space where I can return to put an end to the suffering of the world.

In Asia...

I re-lived many things that My Father asked Me to find again, a time before My public life, a time before the baptism in the River Jordan.

In this way, you will understand, My Companions, how the values of spirituality still exist on the planet. Thus, sacred precincts of the Father, scattered through the Himalayas, such as in Tibet and farther in Asia, hold these principles gestated by humanity from the beginnings of the Earth.

-

God wanted this planet to be a fount of wisdom. 

That many more creatures became enlightened as He was enlightened. 

That is why Buddha came to the world, to demonstrate to all in the distant East the divine Source of compassion, which was the first base of the Christic instruction for humanity. This Source of compassion generated by Buddha to dissolve suffering, pain, and corporeal death, created the bases for the coming of the Messiah.

See then, companions from the whole world, how spirituality is one in all of the Universe and beyond it, based on the Source of Love, of Wisdom, and of Truth. Because it is what My Father always wanted from the beginning, when He created Adam and Eve.

That is why today I present My aspect of the Lord of the East, as the first initiation for this great mission that must take place there next year.

As of now, I invite you to accompany Me in this sacred task, because many values of human spirituality are being lost also in Asia because of the suffering, the errors, the wars, and the difficulties that the nations of Asia experience.

In the same way that My Father, through Buddha, brought the Asian peoples closer to the Source of Divine Compassion, today I deign to draw My children of Asia closer in this cycle to the Source of My Divine Mercy.

In this way, companions, such far away brothers and sisters of the planet will be able to be deserving, as you are, of the treasures that I bring you today, which are the most intimate of My Heart, that I have waited two thousand years to pour out upon Asia, and be able to find again in this people the same value that I once found, when your Master and Lord visited this region of the planet.

Thus I come to reveal and to confirm what was written in some sacred books, in which the story is told of the passage of your Master and Lord through the East. 

If your Master and Lord had not traveled there, He would not have been able to understand, in His phase of sacrifice, all that this people of Asia would need for the future, after My Ascension.

Thus I come to fulfill the Designs of My Father... 

and to elevate your consciousnesses beyond three-dimensional life. 

And although I present Myself to you in three dimensions, My true intention and purpose is that you also achieve the illumination of your beings through prayer, service, humility, love, compassion, and unity.

In this way, I come to show you that you are capable of transforming much more, and of becoming true servers of the Plan, to be able to accompany this Work, which will culminate in being known all over the planet, by all of humanity.

I will give you the gift of the heart impregnated with the gift of love, which will allow you, Companions, to understand all tongues, all cultures, and all nations, according to their nature and origin.

So I come to extend what I gave to the twelve apostles, when they began to follow Me in this Work of preaching the Sacred Word of God, and of proclaiming His Divine Kingdom.

Your Lord of the East desires you to already keep Him present in your hearts, because this sacred aspect will allow you to understand and above all adhere to the next designs that the Spiritual Hierarchy will present to you, in this new cycle.

This is all that I wanted to reveal to you today. 

I still have more to say, but souls need some time to be able to truly correspond to all that is being spiritually built on the planet, beginning with the Spiritual Church of your Lord, which comes to aid souls and the regions of the planet where Mercy and Redemption are needed.

Today your Lord of the East will celebrate a world Communion integrated by all cultures, tongues, and nations that within themselves believe in the existence of love, present in all that is divine.

so that knowledge and wisdom may unite between both hemispheres of the planet.

I come in this way to initiate a new cycle, bringing the synthesis of the Sacred Knowledge of everything the planet has experienced in its wisdom and also in the Fount of instruction.

In this way, companions, as the Lord of the East, I come to provide souls with the knowledge of yesteryear [weleer], that which the great sages of ancient Asia knew.

I come to fulfill a request of My Father, and I come to give continuity, Companions, to what your Lord was not able to finish when instructed in His youth, in ancient Asia, where there truly existed the greatest treasures of Heaven, through knowledge and instruction.

I come here to establish a bridge of Light, so that many souls, unconscious of true sacred knowledge, can awaken.

The time has come for the West to recover the values it lost... 

through its different races and civilizations of the past. 

It is for this reason that your Lord of the East brings in His manifestation of Light the synthesis of all the cultures of the ancient Asian peoples, which in the beginning brought about a balanced and harmonious planet that generated a fountain of wisdom and of instruction.

I had to go through there when I was Jesus, besides going to Persia.

Each being that incarnated on the planet after the Ascension of Christ... 

holds within themselves the cellular Christic Code... 

a Code that the adversary has separated from the interest of those who sleep so that they would not evolve. This potential for Christic Love is necessary and vital in this planetary cycle, in which chaos battles against the forces of evil, to conquer the consciousness of humanity.

The process of purification, of transformation and of non-resistance will allow this precious cellular Christic Code to awaken and manifest in support of the redemption of the race. 

For this, the acts of sacrifice, silence, charity, prayer, Communion and of consecration to the Plan will encourage the emergence of the cellular Christic code within the human consciousness.

The possibilities are being given to everybody. 

All that is needed is determination and promptness so that each human being may, at this time, be an extension of the Love-Wisdom that was sown in the beginnings of this race. 

It will be that Love-Wisdom that will place humanity in a different, more evolutionary reality. 

Thus, I call upon My soldiers of prayer and service to reflect upon what I have told you.

I come at a time of wars and conflicts, in which the nations are beginning to collapse, one by one, as a consequence of their actions and their deceptions. Due to worldwide deception and blindness, in which humankind lies to one another and to themselves, but they will never deceive God.

I come to a world without brotherhood and without love, in which the nations promote wars and conflicts with one another, to stand out and benefit from the suffering and from the lack of those who suffer from this illusion.

I come for the innocents who are losing themselves in this play of human forces, without understanding why they suffer so much, and who ask themselves where God is to support them.

God, Children, contemplates each heart and humanity as a whole. If human beings do not open the doors to Him, of they do not cry out, do not pray and do not seek peace, how will He be able to reach those who are most in need and feel forgotten, not only by humanity, but also by their Father?

I come for an ignorant humanity, which needs to understand that the time for games and spiritual childishness is over. Because of the consequences of their illusions is seen in the decadence of the nations, of the cultures, of the religions, of the souls, of the Kingdoms of Nature.

I come for the Kingdoms, which cannot lift up their word to humanity to ask for Mercy and peace, to ask for the end of the blood shed on the earth and in the oceans, for the end of the martyrdom of the trees, of the imbalance generated in the minerals so that humankind can adorn their bodies and strengthen their illusions.

I come for the consciousness of a planet that is alive, that suffers and endures with all the innocents, both in nature as well as in humanity, and which is not heard except by God and by the Universe, when it calls out for life and for evolution.

I come today to make an appeal together with My children for a world with more peace, so that each one who hears Me may build this peace in their own life, and testify to their transformation, through example and through prayer.

I come to ask you to spread My Call beyond the borders, the beliefs and religions. Because I do not ask but for hearts to strengthen their faith, and this being true and pure, and if it leads you into loving a neighbor and God above all things, that you live it fully and without deceptions.

I come to ask you for inner unity among cultures, respect among religions, an understanding of the paths that God inspired His children to live, not so that they compete with each other, but so that, in the diversity of His creatures, each one might find the way to reach His Heart, be it through Buddha, Mohammed, or Christ. 

If you are sincere and seek to express Love, all will reach God, and there you will understand the essence of unity, which today your minds cannot conceive of, because they are so full of human concepts and ideas.

I am here as a simple Mediator, as the Co-redeemer of this Plan of Love, as a Celestial and Divine Mother sent by God to guide humanity to return to the Origin in the Heart of the Celestial Father.

I do not ask you to worship Me, but rather that you listen to Me, and unite with the Purpose that I bring you, recognizing it as true in light of the need of the world.

It is not I, My children, who needs your prayers. It is you as humanity who must learn how to pray, to save yourselves and to lift this world out of blindness, and the spiritual and almost physical captivity in which it finds itself.

I only ask that you unite with God and understand His Love for life and for each one of His creatures. To understand each human being, as well as each element and species in nature, as a precious jewel of the Creator, an indivisible part of the Heart of the Father. 

Each time one of His children is lost, it is His Heart that suffers, that grieves and that dies with this little essence that comes from Him.

My Call is for Peace, for Truth, and for the experiencing of Love among creatures. 

All the mysteries will be revealed to the eyes that live in this way, responding to My call. 

And everything will be fulfilled, if My requests are fulfilled in your lives.

From 1968 to 1971... 

it’s estimated that one million people claimed to see Mary in Zeitoun. 

Sometimes for mere minutes, sometimes for hours. 

TV crews descended on the small town. 

People of all faiths traveled far and wide, hoping to catch a glimpse. 

Biblical researcher Rebecca Jackson, co-author of A Lady of Light Appears in Egypt, conducted numerous interviews with the eyewitnesses. “What sticks out is that everyone agrees on what they saw, regardless of their faith,” she says. “They were convinced that what they saw in Zeitoun was for real.”

Mary’s last recorded appearance at the church took place on May 29, 1971. 

She was said to be seen holding an olive branch. 

A symbol of peace. In fact, “Zeitoun” comes from the Arabic word for olives (زيتون). 

“I believe Mary’s appearance in Zeitoun was a call for peace and healing in the area, and it was a promise fulfilled,” Jackson says. “She came back to Egypt. Just like she said she would.”

Many people claimed to be miraculously healed after seeing the apparition. 

In her book, Pearl Zaki interviewed Dr. William Nashed Zaki, the ex-director of the Masarra Unit for Medical Treatment in Cairo. He had been suffering from a hernia for 13 years. Desperate for relief, he visited the church in Zeitoun on May 30, 1968. 

“Just before dawn, I saw the Blessed Virgin,” he recalled. “I prayed for a miraculous cure through her intercession. When I reached home, no pain of any sort was bothering me. The hernia had been absolutely cured.”

The purported [vermeende] miracles weren’t limited to Zeitoun. 

Many reported unusual encounters with a woman dressed in white during the time of the apparitions. Like the pair of doctors traveling to Cairo through the Wadi-al-Naturn Valley. They spotted a young woman in white, walking alongside the road. 

Assuming she was a nun from a nearby monastery, they offered her a ride. She was headed to Zeitoun. When they arrived in Cairo, they opened the car door for her. A white dove flew out. 

And the woman? 

She was gone.

Over the next three years... 

Mary is said to have appeared above the cathedral again and again... 

sometimes multiple times a week. 

Always silent, always at night. 

Often accompanied by what witnesses described as 'birds of light'... 

or a 'shower of diamonds' that seemed to form a cross. 

One witness, an American named Pearl Zaki... 

traveled to Cairo when she heard of the apparitions.  “I could see in faint outline the erect white, statue-like figure,” she writes in Before Our Eyes. “Her arms were at her side. Then they moved slowly upward into the position of hands folded in prayer.”

A week later, on April 9th...

Mary appeared again, this time for several minutes. 

Convinced it was an elaborate hoax, police conducted an extensive search of the 15-mile radius around the church. They were sure they would find a source for the apparitions – some projector of sorts. 

They found nothing. The Coptic Orthodox Church conducted its own investigations. On May 5, 1968, the pope of Alexandria – Kyrillos VI – issued a statement deeming the sightings authentic. 

So did the Vatican.

April 2nd, 1968...

Just past 8:30 p.m. 

A typical Tuesday evening for Farouk Mohamed Atwa. 

The 31-year-old Muslim mechanic had just finished his shift. He had severe gangrene on an injured finger – the amputation was scheduled for the next day. 

On his way out of the garage, Farouk glanced up at the cathedral across the street. He couldn’t believe what he saw. A woman in white standing at the highest point of the church’s dome. 

He called out to her, begging her not to jump.

All the commotion drew a crowd. 

Then, as bystanders watched, the woman was bathed in a bright light. She rose in the air, hovering above the cathedral roof and blessing the people below. 

Doves appeared out of nowhere. 

And then, just like that, she disappeared.

The next morning, Farouk arrived at the hospital. 

The doctors sent him home. 

When they pulled back the bandage on his finger... 

they found it had completely and mysteriously healed.

April 2, 1968. 

Zeitoun, Egypt, a suburb outside Cairo. 

The country was in the midst of the Arab-Israeli conflict, on the heels of the Six-Day War [5-10 juni 1967]. Tensions ran high in the predominantly Muslim country, home to a minority of Christians. 

At the center of it all, on Tumanbay Street, sat St. Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church. 

It was built in 1923 because of a vision... 

One night, landowner Tawfik Khalil Ibrahim had a dream. 

The Virgin Mary told him to build her a church in Zeitoun, the very place the Holy Family was said to have passed on their flight to Egypt. If Tawfik did as she asked, Mary promised to appear at the church in 40 years’ time. 

Forty years passed. Nothing happened. 

Until the evening of April 2...
