In the carved [gebeeldhouwde] drapery of the Virgin of Candelaria...
originally, there were strange sequences of letters...
whose meaning is still unknown.
These were:
1 ETIEPFSEPMERI (neck)
2 NARMPRLMOTARE (belt)
3 LPVRINENIPEPNEIFANT (sleeve by candle)
4 OLM INRANFR IAEBNPFM RFVEN NVINAPIMLIFINVIPI NIPIAN (mantle, right arm)
5 FVPMIRNA ENVPMTI EPNMPIR VRVIVINRN APVIMFRI PIVNIAN NTRHN (edge left hand)
6 EAFM IRENINI FMEAREI (bottom of robe)
7 NBIMEI ANNEIPERFMIVIFVF (back of cape)
There have been numerous theories proposed on possible meanings...
One on them says...
