Her given name was...
Amábile ['aimabel,lief']...
Amábile Lúcia Visintainer.
She was born in December 1865, in the town of Vigolo Vattaro, region of Trento [Zuid-Tirol], which is in northern Italy. She was the second child of Anna and Napoleon. Her parents were fervent Christians, but very poor.
During Amabile's childhood, all of Italy was going through a serious economic crisis and contagious plagues. So when she was nine years old, her parents decided to emigrate to Brazil.
In 1875, 10 years old...
Amábile's family arrived in Brazil.
They went to the State of Santa Catarina...
more precisely to the region of Nova Trento...
where several Trentinos were already living.
They went to settle in a newly founded village in the middle of the forest called Vigolo. Everything was very precarious [precair] and poor. Families sought to stay together to survive, feeding the dream of one day prospering.
In the village of Vigolo...
Amábile befriended a girl who would accompany her for the rest of her life: Virgínia Nicolodi.
The two already had a solid faith and this affinity made them grow even more in friendship. The two were always seen praying in the little wooden chapel. They made their first communion on the same day. At that time, Amábile was already twelve years old.
Therefore, the priest in charge of the region, called Servanzi, started pastoral work there. Soon, he noticed the committed and wise spirit of the teenager Amábile and tasked her with teaching catechism to the children, in addition to helping the sick and keeping the village chapel clean, which was dedicated to São Jorge. This task certainly helped to mature the religious vocation in the heart of Amábile.
Amábile took on the mission with body and soul...
always taking her friend Virgínia with her.
The two were totally dedicated to charity for the poorest, helping the sick, getting food for the needy, helping the sick, the elderly, children, in short, everyone who needed it. Amábile and Virgínia began to be recognized by all the Italian people who lived in that distant and abandoned region of Brazil.
