shabari -4

Pleased with Shabari's devotion...

Rama blesses her with his vision.

Rama notices the donas, or bowls, of handmade leaves in which she had offered the fruits, and is impressed by the hard work Shabari has gone through to make them, and hence blesses the tree, so that the leaves naturally grow in the shape of a bowl.

Shabari also tells Rama to take help from Sugriva, and where to find him.

The Ramayana says that Shabari was a very bright and knowledgeable saint!

Rama thereupon delivers his discourse on navavidha bhakti [nine modes devotion] to Shabari.

Pure devotion, He explains, is expressed in nine ways, by...

1 having satsang or association with love-intoxicated devotees and righteous people

2 developing a taste for hearing nectar-like stories of the Lord

3 offering selfless service to the Guru's lotus feet

4 singing kirtan, hymns to the Lord's virtues, without guile [bedrog]

5 chanting japa - constant repetition of the Holy name - and bhajans

6 following scriptural injunctions, practicing self-governance & detachment

7 seeing the Lord manifested everywhere, worshiping His saints more than Himself

8 not finding fault with anyone, being contented with one's lot

9 and surrendering oneself without any reserve, with total faith in His strength
[this being the highest stage]

Anyone who practices one of these nine modes of His bhakti pleases the Lord most, and reaches Him without fail. That which was most difficult for the greatest of yogis, was easily attained by Shabari, because of her sincere devotion.
