the Gāyatrī Mantra
is dedicated to Savitr, a Vedic Sun deity
off-spring of mother goddess Aditi
oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ
tat savitur vareṇyaṃ
bhargo devasya dhīmahi
dhiyo yo naḥ prachodayāt
[Rigveda 3.62.10]
translation of Vivekananda:
'we meditate on the glory
of that Being who has produced this universe
may He enlighten our minds'
bhur, bhuvah, svaha
stands for the three worlds:
- earth, heaven, inner space
- earth, planets/solar system, galaxy
- gross/physical, subtle/psychical, potential/causal
- existence, consciousness, bliss
tat savitur varenyam
that sungod, supreme worshipable
bhargo devasya dheemahi
divine light we meditate upon
dhiyo yo nah prachodayat
the mind we all have, enlighten it
