Maria Bethânia (Veloso)

en haar oudere broer Caetano Veloso

werden geboren in het stadje Santo Amaro...

- voluit Santo Amaro da Purificação ! -

Patients were required...

to say prayers for their benefactors.

For the brothers and sisters who cared for them.

For the civic and the ecclesiatical authorities who presided over the hospital.

By the 15th century, the financial aspects were presided over by the city...

And they had special people who were appointed, the guardians, to watch over that.

And there was also the bisshop of Tournai/Doornik, who presided over the personnel...

who were of course religious -  he also was allowed to review the finances...

the annual report of the finances.

These were the two top male and female officers, of the religious.

Anthony Seghers was the spiritual master of the hospital.

Jacob de Ceuninc was the bursor [econoom].

You can see them with their patron saints:

Saint Anthony Abbot and Saint James.

Agnes de Casembroot, hospital prioress...

has Saint Agnes, with her little sheep.

And sister Clara van Hulsen has Saint Claire...

who is holding a monstrance.

These are their name patrons.

So that we can identify who they are...

It was believed...

that both death and disease were caused by original sin.

So, how were you réally going to be cured?

You are going to be cured by the intervention of Christ and the saints.

The goal of the medieval hospital was not only caring for the bodily needs of the ill...

but the goal was to help people make a good death.

Now, what does that mean?

It means, that they would have a chance to avail themselves of the sacraments:

of confession, of extreme unction, taking their last communion...

so that theire sins would be wiped out...

and they would go directly to heaven...

or perhaps spend less time in purgatory.

And purgatory was conceived as a place...

like hell, but temporary...

But you wouldn't want to stand time, there...

Thus, making a good death...

and they would hélp you go to heaven...

thát was so important.

In fact when a person first entered the hospital...

the first thing they did, was call the priest.

The priests were attached to the hospital.

They had a nearby house.

Interestingly enough, they rarely called upon physicians.

But called upon the priest all the time.

His duties were not to a parish, as in an earlier period.

No, it was decided it was only to the hospital.

He was the priest for the brothers and sisters...

and for the patients.

So the first thing, you were brought in...

If you were conscious, you would make your confession.

You'd be absolved of your sins.

If you were not conscious, you'd probably receive extreme unction.

Or certainly at least the anointing of the sick.

Then, mass, Divine Office...

and... relics... and art work!

Rogier van der Weyden, Laatste Oordeel (detail)

All these painting have as their theme Salvation.

Because... you are in danger of death!

And this concern was also for the religious who served in the hospital.

They all wanted to go to Heaven, and followed the Acts of Mercy...

as Christ said they are necessary for someone to enter Heaven.

fra' claudio 7

Fra' Claudio Granzotto led a humble and penitential life...

also dedicating himself to begging, which he even practiced on the streets of Santa Lucia where he was known as an affirmed and esteemed professor.

In the years of the Second World War, Fra' Claudio intensified his dedication to the most needy. He gave up meals to offer his lunch to the poor, gave them the wood to heat his workshop, and to get some heat himself, he burned damp paper that only produced smoke.

Already as a novice...

he was convinced that art could go very well with serving the pots, the sink, with looking after the pigs or the chicken coop, taking care of the vegetable garden, the convent workshops, the sick and the poor.

While in Vittorio Veneto, sculpting the Christ awaiting the resurrection, professor Giuseppe Modolo once said: 'You're slow, my Riccardo, it seems like you do not want to finish it'.

Fra' Claudio: 'What do you want, Bepi? I have many other things to look forward to: soup for the poor, dishes to wash, the refectory, the pigs.'

Prof. Modolo: 'Couldn't they exempt you? You are a sculptor!'

Fra' Claudio: 'I would ask you for these occupations! It is more important to me to be a good religious than be a good artist. I have come to experience the same pleasure in working the Christ as in cleaning the dishes. And not because he turned off art, but because I believe I have overcome it!'

And so 'Oltre l'Arte' [Beyond Art] would also be the title of his first biography...

written by his brother Father E. Urbani.

Santa Lucia di Piave [bij Venetië]...

boasts a splendid church and a very high bell tower...

the work of local artisans and artists, among which the sculptor Fra' Claudio Granzotto stands out.

His earthly pilgrimage began on 23 August 1900, and ended on 15 August 1947, the solemnity of the Assumption of Mary into heaven, as predicted by the holy pilgrim.

Interrupted school attendance at the beginning of the third year of elementary school, due to the sad family situations created after the death of his father, then still named Riccardo works, as an apprentice, in the workshops of artisans and as a bricklayer in the small construction company of his brother Giovanni, who will also build the beautiful bell tower, the pride of the parish of Santa Lucia.

Riccardo, from an early age, felt a strong inclination towards art.

A natural, innate artistic vocation. Encouraged and supported by his family, and by the parish priest Don Vittorio Morando, Riccardo moved to Venice.

He takes and passes the artistic high school exams, an indispensable prerequisite for enrolling in the sculpture school at the Academy. He will come out of it, after four years (1929) with the title of professor of sculpture, with full marks 10/10 with honors.

-

Professor Riccardo is an established sculptor by now.

But his success, his fame leaves him restless.

Why?

He feels that the path followed so far does not satisfy him.

There must be another one, perhaps more difficult, but one that excites him to walk.

He perceives that 'beauty' and 'good' are inseparable...

both in art and in life.

Riccardo meditates, prays, suffers, seeks.

It also happened to Francis of Assisi at the beginning of his conversion.

He spends entire nights in front of the Blessed Sacrament, by which he will be more and more enlightened and motivated in his radical choice of life:

a clean break with the world !

-

On November 27, 1933...

he entered the convent, in San Francesco del Deserto...

to devote himself exclusively to God and to sacred art.

Four months after his dressing, he must leave the enchanting island of the Venetian lagoon for the first, grandiose work commissioned from him by his superiors: the Lourdes Grotto in Chiampo.

He goes to Lourdes to study and contemplate the original.

In one year, he made this immense sculpture with incessant work of trowel and chisel.

The finished cave renders the Lourdian environment with such truth, that it makes him say: 'Many will come here to pray!'

The cave was inaugurated on 29 September 1935.

Riccardo returned to San Francesco del Deserto to begin the canonical year of the novitiate, as a lay brother (7 December 1935). From that day on, Prof. Riccardo Granzotto will simply be called Fra' Claudio.

Cardinal Albino Luciani, patriarch of Venice, during a concelebration at the Grotto of Chiampo, in 1976, surprised everyone by saying:

'In this cave, Fra Claudio gave, without knowing it, the touch of Franciscan art to Franciscan theology on the Immaculate Conception. With the most devoted statue of him, he gave a marble seal to the books of his theological confreres.'

LETTER TO HIS HOLINESS PIUS XII

BY FRA CLAUDIO GRANZOTTO

Most Blessed Father

Your Holiness will forgive my daring... I was moved by a great desire, that of seeing the Son of God most loved and praised. So he suggested to me the idea of carving the image of Christ in marble, taken from the Holy Shroud.

And I also modeled in the clay two portraits of the same, taken from the same shroud and from the holy shroud of Veronica. This I did with long study, great passion, and intense love.

The prefixed purpose of this realization is to demonstrate to humanity once again the great love that Christ brought for us by highlighting the images of Him detected by the footprints left in the sacred linens.

The Holy Faces depict the Redeemer in three attitudes: Justice, Love, and Mercy...

of which the first two I believe are so far the closest to the likeness of Christ.

But what is most interesting is that under the three images are placed the present written letters assigned with which to form many report cards and these are then dispensed for the whole world, so that the world may know the God of infinite Love and Mercy for those who fear Him and they return to Him, and just Judge and Punisher of those who do not fear Him and profane His Holy Laws.

This is my great desire, Your Holiness, that Jesus Christ our Lord be better known and loved more, and before the Most High every knee must bend, so that only Him may be honor and glory, now and always for ever.

So be it.

A noteworthy detail:

from the studies made on the Holy Shroud, the image of Christ emerges of an admirable perfection in all its parts; also checked with the best canons of anatomy; this harmony, balanced in all its details, cannot be found entirely in the man corrupted by vices, which is why it clearly demonstrates the authenticity of the Holy Shroud.

Deign, Your Holiness, to take all of this into consideration. I have a great faith, which assures me that, leaning on His Holiness, for the enhancement of this initiative, it will do much good to souls and will give greater glory to God.

I will then draw from the Son the portrait of Our Lady of Sorrows, his most holy Mother.

I humbly ask for forgiveness… and deign, Your Holiness, to give me your holy blessing.

Your most humble son,

Fra' Claudio Granzotto

MERCY

A dead God to me

Look and think, my creature!...

Who are you... and who am I...

You are a worm that crawls on the earth, today it is and tomorrow it is not...

I am the Son of the Most High... creator and ruler of the whole universe.

And for an infinite love incomprehensible to man, I left Heaven and came to Earth...t

ook a body similar to yours, lived poor, despised, vilified, betrayed, scourged, crowned with thorns, condemned, crucified, and died from atrocious pain among the pangs of my mother and the scorn of my people.

And why all this?...

For your sins, my creature.

I redeemed you from the bondage of Satan.

And you, what is your gratitude?...

To a divine Heart that madly loved you?

What could I do... that I didn't do it?

And as a reward, with your sins you deny me the painful passion...

you make me agonize again on the cross.

-

Look and contemplate, my creature, your God who died for you!...

Oh, if you only knew who your God is!

And what is hell... and heaven... you would change your life instantly!

And don't you care about what you need for your salvation?...

that all the riches of the world benefit you if you then lose your soul?

Oh miserable creature, love your infinitely merciful God:

with Me you will have everything...

without Me you will have only pain and eternal death.

I am necessary to your mind and your heart, because I am away truth and life and the only true happiness. Only by returning to Me will you have perfect joy on earth, true light, and in heaven you will be blessed for everlasting centuries, so be it.

JUSTICE

Return to Christ.

Woe to you creatures if you do not repent and return to me!

You don't want to listen to my Law!

Which is the Law of Health and Mercy!

Do not love me for love!

You will necessarily love me...

I will cleanse the earth as it has never been cleansed after the flood:

through warfare, hunger and religious persecution.

-

It is out of my infinite Goodness and Mercy...

that I make this appeal known to the whole world to repent...

and to repair the offenses made to the Divine Majesty...

and to my Most Holy Mother.

Blessed are you if you fear Me...

and believe in Me...

-

Otherwise new punishments will occur...

worse than the first...

entire nations will be destroyed...

and the just punishment will not cease...

until the blood of the martyrs has appeased the wrath of God.

-

But what are the temporal punishments...

compared to the eternal ones!...

A lost paradise of eternal gaudis...

that the human eye never saw...

and ear never heard...

hell deserved in an abyss of pains...

inconceivable to the human mind...

which will never end!...

and will always continue!...

always and never !...

always and never !...

always and never !...

Sinner meditate on the abyss that awaits you...

if you do not repent and return to me.

Who has time, don't wait for time!...

giastin 5

'We are in the world the way we are'...

Giastin told her mother.

In the description of the dry trees, apparently dead...

Giastin is strongly autobiographical:

despite her illness, the deformities of her body, she remains in the humility of welcoming and experiencing herself the way she is, without pretension or expectation of physical healing, her soul feeding itself with God.

Her physical limits, like any person's limits...

are no barrier to living fúlly.

Because all you need to be happy...

comes from above.

Shortly before her death, in 2004, she wrote:

'No one is a prisoner of his limits...

as his mind is free to fly.'

The sun is life.

Without it, we could not live.

How beautiful it is to see at sunset, with all its colors, every time it is different.

365 days a year, it sets differently.

Not to mention when it rises...

Il Sole / The Sun

Grasping those emotions is inevitable.

When the sun comes up, it is a new life, a new day, a new opportunity to change.

In most of my paintings the sun is depicted.

Which for me represents God...

as the One Who is above everything...

as the Source of Life, as something that cannot be done without.

I always draw it at the center...

because it is at the center of my life...

and it should be at the center of everyone's life.

I always hope to convey this.

I hope that after seeing my paintings...

someone will welcome God into his heart.

giastin 2

This painting, Maternità...

is one of Giastin's last paintings...

prepared for an exhibition she never managed to set up.

Two distinct trees, representing parent and child...

have their trunks united in one point at the base.

Their union will not last long, as they are destined for a complete separation.

Giastin wants to communicate that mother and father must let their child go...

because this is what true motherhood and fatherhood consists of.

-

Even if the title refers to motherhood...

the painting does not only represent the mother figure.

Because God is mother ánd father, and parenting must be inspired by that of God towards man.

-

The smaller trunk in the shade takes light from the large tree illuminated by the sky, and the position of the two foliage suggests a great tenderness of looks.

The trunks are very robust, as always in Giastin's paintings, because they refer to the strength and solidity of the love that unites parents and children, inspired by the love that unites God to man.

The sky at dawn has a streaked [gestreept] appearance, due to the diluted [verdunde] color that gives the image a rarefied [ijle] and unreal atmosphere.

-

For the first time Giastin introduces the gold color...

in the sky and in the grass...

to symbolize the spiritual wealth that parents give to their children to go into the world...

and for this, she affixed her signature on the earth, to testify how many precious things...

she has received from her mother and father.

Already at the age of two and a half...

Giastin was beginning to have a relationship of special friendship with Jesus.

She was sorry to see him suffer on the cross and kept Him company by telling Him what she lived every day. Together with her sister Rosaria, she told Him jokes and funny facts, to distract him from all the pain that people normally pour on him. In doing so, they were sure that Jesus would always go to see them to have fun.

Out of curiosity...

to understand everything that was written...

Giastin asked her sister to teach her to read and write when she was only five years old and she soon became passionate about daily reading of the Gospel for children.

From the age of four, she showed a great passion for drawing, making her prefer colors to toys. Her days went by happily, devoted to drawing and writing, but above all to her friends, who populated our home, and to the great love of her sister Rosaria, to whom she was very attached.

When her beloved sister died in 1996, Giastin was nine years old, and to her great chagrin, she abandoned all her passions for four years and then resumed them with great enthusiasm.

Not being able to enroll in the Art School...

as she would have liked...

for health reasons...

she began a passionate study of the artists most congenial to her, Monet and especially Van Gogh.

She painted and wrote a lot, so much so that in 2002 San Marco in Lamis hosted the first exhibition of her paintings entitled 'Il Volo', revived in Rignano Garganico in August of the same year.

She began to collaborate with the beatitutdo.it site in the section dedicated to children, called Beatitudokids, where she shared her passions and her discoveries, and offered a reflection on the values of life.

In June 2003, she proposed to San Marco, Apricena and Rignano Garganico a new exhibition entitled  '…E Continuo A Volare...' [and I keep flying].

In 2003 she published a collection of poems and prayers presented to high school students in the town's municipal library, an event filmed and broadcast by RAI.

On February 21st, 2004, Giastin flew to heaven, and on June 4th and 5th  of the same year, in Foggia, at Palazzo Dogana, the retrospective entitled 'Giastin racconta' was held, re-proposed in Otranto at the Diocesan Museum on June 19th.

Subsequently, the exhibition was hosted in Torremaggiore, in Rignano Garganico, in San Giovanni Rotondo (all in 2005) and in Sternatia (in August 2007).

On May 22, 2004, the Giastin Prize was established in the city of Asti's 'La Poesia Salva la Vita'. In 2005 she was included in the Bolaffi catalog for works of art, and since 2008 she has been one of the contemporary poets in the Provincial Library of Foggia.

-

For each event...

Giastin always prepared much earlier.

Like for Christmas, she already started in September for the decorations to be made.

Because every year, the crib theme was different, and so the tree changed style too.

She never got bored.

In the evening, when I said to her: 'Giastin, I'll put you to bed', she replied: 'Why are the days so short?' I looked at her, and laughing I said: 'Giastin, you are unique, I believe that the good Lord threw the mold after creating you.'

She laughed out loud replying: 'Sure mom, He wants me unique in the world!'

What a subject that she was!

cosimo 3

When his older sister Rosaria died, in 1996, Cosimo was two.

And when his sister Giastin died, he was ten.

The relationship with Giastin was very deep. She played a bit like his mother, but she also elected him as art critic of her paintings, and redid a canvas if he didn't like it.

Rosaria, the elder sister, gave Giastin...

and Giastin gave Cosimo the page of the gospel of the 'Beatitudes'...

with the hope of, when realizing at least one in life...

embracing all three again one day in Paradise.

And Cosimo flew to heaven on February 24th, 2009...

certain of reaching his sisters, thanking everyone...

and repeating three times "Jesus, you know I love you".

Christmas is something to be enjoyed
and then told: a special day, evil is abolished.
Smile in all colors, Love born in hearts.

The stars shine in the sky, no difference in skin.
A wonderful night, in the cradle Jesus rests.
He was born to teach us all to Love.

bernardino 1

Foundation of the Teresa of Avila's House of Valladolid.

Monastery called the Concepción de Nuestra Señora del Carmen.

Four or five months after the monastery of Saint Joseph had been founded in Malagón...

a young gentleman of quality [Don Bernardino de Mendoza, brother of Álvaro, bishop] told me, that if I wanted to build a monastery in Valladolid, he would very willingly give me a house, with a most handsome and spacious garden attached to it, there was a large vineyard also inside, and he wished to give me possession immediately.

As it was of great value, I accepted it, though I had not resolved to found a house there, because the place [Rio de Olmos] was about a mile from the city. But I thought we might easily go to the city afterwards, when possession had been taken. And as he made the offer so very willingly, I did not wish to refuse accepting so good a work, nor to check his devotion.

About two months later, a little more or less, he fell so suddenly ill, that he was deprived of the use of his speech, and was unable therefore to make his confession, although he gave many proofs of being sorry for his sins. He died in a short time, a great distance from where I was.

Our Lord told me, that his salvation had been in great danger, but that He had Mercy on him, on account of the service done to His Blessed Mother, in giving that house to found a monastery of Her order; and that he should not be delivered from purgatory, until the first mass was said there, and that then he would be freed.

The grievous sufferings of this soul were so continually present to me, that though I wished to found a house in Toledo, I left it at that time and hastened to found (as well as I could) one in Valladolid.

This work could not be effected so quickly as I desired...

because I was oblied to remain in Saint Joseph's of Ávila, which was under my charge, and afterwards I stopped for some time in Saint Joseph's of Medina del Campo.

Being one day ther in prayer, our Lord told me to make haste, because that soul suffered greatly. Upon hearing these words, I commenced my journey immediately, though without any preparation, and entered Valladolid on the day of San Lorenzo.

When I saw the house, I was exceedingly afflicted [buitengewoon gekweld], because I perceived it would be madness for the nuns to remain there without very great expense [much costs]; and although it was great  for recreation, because the orchard was so delightful, it could not be but very unhealthy, since a river ran close by it.

Though I was exceedingly fatigued, yet I wished to go and hear Mass in a monastery of our Order, which stood at the entrance of the city; but as it was so far away, it only increased my pain the more. However, I did not tell my companions, so as not to discourage them. For, although weak, I had some faith that the Lord would provide a remedy for the accomplishment of what He had told me. Accordingly, I privately employed workmen to commence building the walls (that so we might have enclosure) and to do whatever else was necessary.

The clergyman I mentioned before was with us, called Julián de Ávila, and one of the two friars who wanted to become discalced, and made acquainted with our manner of living in these houses. This license could not be obtained as soon as Sunday, but leave was given for mass to be said in the place we had prepared for a chapel, and accordingly it was said.

I had not thought that then would be fulfilled what I had heard concerning this soul: for although I was told it would be 'at the first mass', I thought it would take place at that mass in which the Blessed Sacrament would be exposed.

When the priest came to where we were to commune, with the Most Sacred Host in his hands, as soon as I approached to receive it, that same young gentleman I have spoken  of appeared to me, with a shining countenance, by the side of the priest, looking very glad and cheerful, and with his hands joined together. He thanked me for what I had done in freeing him from purgatory, and then that soul flew straightway to heaven.

Indeed, as soon as I understood that he was in the way of salvation, I was very glad, because when I had heard of his sudden death, I had been in a manner hopeless, fearing lest his soul might be lost, for it seemed to me that another kind of death was necessary for his manner of living, since (though he had many good qualities) he was given to the vanities of this world.

True it is, he told my companions he thought his death very near. Wonderful indeed it is, how pleasing to our Lord any service is which is done to His Mother, and great is His Mercy. May He be praised and blessed by all men, Who thus rewards woth eternal life and glory our mean and miserable actions, and make them great who are of themselves so worthless.
