Sainte-Anne-d'Auray...

is a village in the Diocese of Vannes (Morbihan), in Brittany.

Famous for its sanctuary and for its pilgrimages, or 'pardons', in honour of Saint Anne.

To whom the people of Brittany, in very early times, on becoming Christian, had dedicated a chapel.

This first chapel was destroyed about the end of the seventh century.

But the memory of it was kept alive by tradition...

and the hamlet was called 'Keranna'...

i.e. 'Village of Anne'.

More than nine centuries later,1624-25...

at the beginning of the seventeenth century...

St. Anne is said to have appeared several times...

to Yves Nicolazic, a simple and pious village farmer.

She commanded him to rebuild the ancient chapel.

The apparitions became so frequent, and before so many witnesses...

that Sebastien de Rosmadec, Bishop of Vannes, deemed it his duty to inquire into the matter.

Yves Nicolazic, and numerous witnesses, testified to the truth of events which had become famous throughout Brittany, and around 1630 the Bishop gave permission for the building of a chapel.

presenting of Louis XIV to Virgin Mary

Anne of Austria and her husband Louis XIII...

mother and father of the future king Louis XIV...

enriched the sanctuary with many gifts.

Among them a relic of St. Anne brought from Jerusalem in the thirteenth century.

And in 1641 the Queen obtained from the Pope the erection of a confraternity...

which Pius IX [1792-1878] raised to the rank of an archconfraternity in 1872.

In the meanwhile...

pilgrimages had begun...

and became more numerous year by year...

nor did the Revolution put a stop to them.

The chapel, indeed was plundered, the Carmelites who served it driven out, and the miraculous statue of St. Anne was burned at Vannes in 1793. Yet, the faithful still flocked to the chapel, which was covered with ex-votos.

In 1810...

the convent of the Carmelites was turned into a petit séminaire.

In 1866, the Cardinal Godefroy Brossay-St.Marc laid and blessed the first stone of the present basilica.

A new statute of Saint Anne was solemnly consecrated by order of Pius IX, 30 September 1868.

St. Anne has continued to be the favourite pilgrimage of Brittany down to the present day.

Pope John Paul II visited here in 1996.

Every summer...

there is the Grand Pardon of Sainte Anne...

the largest pilgrimage in the region on July 26th, the feast of St. Anne.

The religious services are followed by picnics, dancing and entertainment.

In 1841...

a local Métis named Piché...

asked Bishop Provencher in far-off St. Boniface to send a priest to live among them.

Priests were scarce. Bishop Provencher had only four priests to minister to a territory that stretched from Ontario to the Rocky Mountains. Still, the next spring, he sent Father Jean-Baptiste Thibault to make an exploratory trip of over 1,400 kilometers.

-

In 1844...

a small shack [keet, hut] was built to house Fr. Thibault and a young priest named Joseph Bourassa

Fr. Thibault immediately blessed the lake and called it 'Lac Ste Anne'.

This was in fulfillment of a promise he had made...

to give her name to the first mission he would ‘father’.

It was the first permanent Catholic mission west of Winnipeg.

The Oblates of Mary Immaculate...

are a society of Catholic missionaries.

Founded in France in the early 1800’s, they are especially dedicated to preach the Gospel to the poorest of the poor and to serve in the most difficult of missions.

With the coming of the Oblates, such as Father Albert Lacombe, the Mission enjoyed a period of great growth and importance. These men quickly gained a reputation for bravery, goodness and holiness.

In plagues, they cared for the sick and comforted the dying, asking nothing in return. They worked for peace between warring parties and brought an end to the fighting. They preached the Gospel everywhere and many came to believe in Christ.

-

Father René Rémas especially had a reputation for great holiness.

Once, when the men were fishing on the lake and were suddenly threatened by a violent storm, their wives – fearing for their lives – ran to get Fr. Rémas. The priest went to the shore and commanded the storm and the angry lake to be calm. He sprinkled it with holy water and immediately all became still.

By 1887...

the buffalo had disappeared...

and the lake lost its importance as a gathering place.

Most of the population moved away, and the mission was almost deserted.

Its pastor, Father Joseph Lestanc, then decided to close the mission.

-

Then, on his first holiday back home to France in thirty years...

he paid a visit to the Shrine of Ste Anne d’Auray.

He later related that while in prayer at this Shrine, God revealed to him in a powerful way that he must not close the mission. Rather, he must build a shrine there in honor of St. Anne, the grandmother of Jesus. It would be a place for pilgrims to come and receive spiritual help.

Father Lestanc was deeply moved.

On his return, he lost no time in carrying out what God had revealed to him.

The first pilgrimage was held in 1889, with several hundred attending.

It soon became an annual event, on July 26th, feastday of St. Anne...

drawing people from all directions and many nations.

The story goes...

that a chief from what is now North Dakota...

followed a vision and the distant sound of drumming.

He and his grandson created a raft to explore the lake.

As they approached this island...

in the middle of the island was this beautiful woman...

with her hair down, there were feathers in her hairs, she had like a full buckskin [daim].

And all around the perimeter [omtrek] of this island were children.

They were the ones hitting the drums.

And then, it went into one beat.

And they say, that after that, they all went into her hand like that.

And that was the last they've heard of it.

It was decided the Nakota People would settle here.

"more than satisfactory at the end of 2021-beginning of 2022"...

the historic launch of the very first oil platform in Angola has taken place last June.

Going by the name Lifua A, in the Malongo Camp in Cabinda.

Supported by US giant Chevron through its local subsidiary...

Cabinda Gulf Oil Company Limited (CABGOC)...

the project required a budget of 60 million USD.

July 19th 2022...

Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço...

inaugurated the construction of the new Basilica of the Shrine.

Said to be the largest centre for Marian devotion in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Republican president said...

that the Basilica would be an important religious landmark in Angola, south [linkeroever] of the Kwanza River, that will boost religious tourism when complete.

Three years is the time frame for concluding the works.

Around the Basilica will be constructed a parking lot for more than one thousand cars, a social and medical centre, an administration block and a school, among other amenities.

The Archbishop of Saurimo, Jose Manuel Imbamba, who is President of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and Sao Tomé (CEAST), assured that the building of the Basilica first discussed during Pope Saint John Paul II’s visit to Angola in 1992 was fínally taking off!

The Angolan Government committed...

to meeting the costs for the building.

Shrine from the year 1589 !

The Shrine is considered by many...

to be the most popular place of pilgrim and worship in Angola.

Every year, the Shrine attracts local and foreign pilgrims. In the local Kimbundu language, “Muxima” means heart. The name was given to the Shrine due to its prime location in the middle (the heart) of the province.
