Seriously sick...

Pauline decided to go on pilgrimage to Mugnano del Cardinale...

to the tomb of Saint Philomena, whose cult was still controversial.

She was first received in Rome by Pope Gregory XVI and asked him if, if she returned cured, that would be a sufficient miracle to advance the saint's cause.

The sovereign pontiff replied yes, convinced that he was dealing with a dying woman and that she should not be refused this consolation, as he confides in Italian to the nuns present.

Pauline arrives in Mugnano del Cardinale...

after an exhausting trip in the August heat.

It is the eve of the feast of the saint and the crowd of pilgrims throngs.

Te next day, she takes communion and faints. She was believed to be dead, but came to her senses and asked to be carried to the saint's tomb, and it was then, that she was miraculously cured.

The superior of the convent rang the bells, to announce the news while the crowd exulted. After spending a few days at Mugnano in prayers of thanks, Pauline Jaricot returned to Rome, where the pope approved of her work and gave her his blessing.
