If sinful passions are conquered...

then the enemy will act through other people...

In the neighboring village of Glukhov lived a young peasant, Ilya Nemtsov...

who was related to Dunya. In his youth, he prayed long at night, fasted and tried to lead a pious life, he even built a chapel. Then he went on a pilgrimage to Mount Athos, where he is said to have received a secret schedule. Two years later, he returned to the country of Nizhny Novgorod, bringing with him many different shrines.

The peasants began to honor Ilya as a great pilgrim, and to ask him for advice, others even called him Saint Ilyusha. Indeed, while he was fighting on the holy land of Athos, he acquired the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

But he couldn't resist the temptation...

his heart went up and he fell. Passion for money ruined grace in him. He went to Moscow, where he sold all his sacred things, and started his own business. Three years later, he returned to Diveyevo, settled in Puz, and began to lead a riotous [losbandig] life. During the Civil War, he was called up for military service, but arriving from the front on vacation, he decided not to go back and stayed in the village.

At the same time, the charitable life of Dunya and her assistants became very resentful for him. He started coming to their house, preventing them from praying, and mocking them in every way. Once he was detained by the police and sent to Ardatov, but escaped and again came to the blessed.

When she told him, he would be arrested again, he stated, "I'll run away."

"You'll run and they'll kill us," Dunya said.

"Well, let it be!" replied Ilya...

cursing everyone with obscene words...

and running away...
