Who goes to the hospital?

These hospitals were charitable hospitals.

In the case of St. John's, it was a municipal hospital, a city hospital. But it was staffed by religious, by brothers and sisters who took their vows of povert, chastity, obedience and followed the Augustinian Orderl, the Rule of St. Augustin.

The hospital had two missions, if you will. One was the care of the destitute ill [behoeftige zieken], and the other was to give travelers one nights food and lodging. They couldn't stay there, but if you were traveling, you could stop at a hospital.

The destitute ill...

If a person had a home, if they had a family, or if they had enough money to pay for service to take care of them, they stayed at home to be treated, to get well or die, calling the priest or physician.

It was only the very poorest people who would usually go to a hospital. Someone who couldn't afford to hire someone, or didn't have enough family members, or didn't even have a house where he or she could be treated.
